The Story of San Gimignano

Welcome to San Gimignano! This stunning hilltop village has held its ground for over 800 years, taking us back to the thrilling era of the Middle Ages.

Picture this: families locked in a friendly rivalry, battling it out to construct the tallest towers. It was a race to the sky, a symbol of wealth and status. The higher your tower soared, the more your family’s name echoed through the town as the ultimate power players. Get ready to explore the remnants of this competitive spirit and uncover the secrets of San Gimignano’s towering past!

In the glory days of the Middle Ages, San Gimignano boasted a staggering number of around 72 towers that adorned its skyline.

However, as the winds of time swept through the centuries, the number of these architectural marvels dwindled, leaving behind a captivating mystery.

Presently, there remains some debate regarding the exact count of surviving towers, with estimates suggesting that approximately 14 of these magnificent structures still grace the horizon.

San Gimignano’s historical significance has been recognized on a global scale, earning it the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage status. This honor safeguards the ancient buildings and helps us delve into their extraordinary stories.

It’s no wonder why San Gimignano is renowned as one of Tuscany’s most iconic villages! And here’s the cherry on top: a mere 25 miles north of Siena, it’s the ultimate day trip destination, offering you the perfect opportunity to explore and soak up the magic of both enchanting places.

How Long to Stay

While it’s possible to experience the highlights in a day trip, I highly recommend spending at least two to three days to fully immerse yourself in the village’s charm and absorb its rich history.

During this time, you can leisurely explore the medieval streets, marvel at the surviving towers, and visit the captivating museums and churches. Additionally, take the opportunity to savor the local cuisine, indulge in wine tastings at nearby vineyards, and soak in the breathtaking views of the Tuscan countryside.

By allowing yourself a couple of days, you’ll have ample time to wander the enchanting alleys, uncover hidden gems, and appreciate the relaxed pace of life in this historical gem. So, consider extending your stay and make the most of your experience in San Gimignano!

Getting to San Gimignano

Getting to and around San Gimignano is an integral part of planning your trip. Here’s a helpful travel guide to assist you:

Getting to San Gimignano:

  • By Air: If you’re planning to travel to San Gimignano by air, you can conveniently fly into either Florence Airport (FLR) or Pisa International Airport (PSA). I always compare prices first on Aviasales before booking. Once you arrive at either of these airports, you have multiple options to travel to San Gimignano, including taking a train, a bus, or even renting a car.

  • By Car: If you’d rather explore Tuscany at your own pace, renting a car is the easiest way to combine San Gimignano with nearby towns and wineries. I compare rental prices across local agencies with Get Rent A Car before picking one up.

What to Pack

CLOTHING

Pack weather-appropriate clothing based on the season of your visit. In general, bring comfortable walking shoes, light and breathable clothing for warm weather, a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings, and a hat and sunglasses for sun protection.

STAY CONNECTED & COVERED

Roaming charges are no fun on a Tuscan road trip. Skip them with an eSIM from Yesim — install it before you land and you’ll have data the moment you touch down. And before any trip, I always sort my travel insurance through EKTA — quick to set up and one less thing to think about while you’re chasing towers and vineyards.

ELECTRONICS

Consider bringing a universal power adapter to charge your electronic devices. A camera or smartphone with a good camera will come in handy for capturing the beautiful sights of San Gimignano, check out my Camera and Gear post for inspo.

San Gimignano is a popular destination year-round, with summer (June – August) being the busiest time. During these months, the village attracts vacationers from all over Italy, leading to crowds, especially when tour buses arrive at peak times. But fear not! Here’s a savvy tip to make the most of your visit.

To experience San Gimignano at its most tranquil, plan your visit outside of the peak hours. Opt for early mornings or late afternoons/evenings when the tour groups have departed. For an even more serene experience, stay overnight and witness the breathtaking views during dusk or dawn.

By timing your visit strategically, you’ll have the chance to explore the village peacefully and soak in its charm without the crowds. San Gimignano invites you to discover its tranquil side – embrace the magic and enjoy a serene experience in this captivating destination.

Things To Do

San Gimignano may be small, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t lots of things to do. Simply wandering its meandering streets is an adventure in itself, unveiling hidden corners, magnificent churches, and captivating houses.

Torre Grossa

Rising proudly to a height of 54 meters, Torre Grossa, aptly named ‘big tower,’ reigns as the tallest marvel in San Gimignano. Anchored majestically on the main square, Piazza del Duomo, this impressive structure once served as a watchtower, standing as a steadfast protector against potential attacks from the valley below.

Opening Times:

April – September: 10 AM to 7.30 PM. October – March: 11 AM to 5.30 PM.

See ticket prices here.

Cathedral Santa Maria Assunta

The Cathedral Santa Maria Assunta reigns as a breathtaking masterpiece that dominates the enchanting Piazza del Duomo. Adorned with incredible frescoes and murals, the walls come alive, telling tales of biblical scenes that stir the imagination and evoke a sense of wonder.

Tip: Want to visit both, Torre Grossa and the Cathedral? I got you covered, get a discount by visiting them both! Get both attraction tickets HERE

Palazzo del Popolo

Palazzo del Popolo, the esteemed “people’s palace” that stands as a testament to San Gimignano’s vibrant past. Constructed from the quintessential San Gimignano stone, this stunning edifice not only houses the local government office but also embodies the essence of medieval architectural beauty.

Piazza Della Cisterna

the picturesque Piazza Della Cisterna, a square as enchanting as it is unique. Named after the cistern (well) gracing its center, this delightful space boasts a triangular shape, defying convention with its distinct charm. Surrounding its three edges, you’ll discover a collection of ancient buildings that exude timeless beauty.

One such building is the legendary Torre del Diavolo, known as the tower of the devil. Legend has it that the owner returned to San Gimignano to find the tower mysteriously taller than before. Baffled by this magical transformation, the only explanation he could fathom was that the devil himself was behind it.

Cappella di Santa Fina

Cappella di Santa Fina, a magnificent Renaissance chapel steeped in history and wonder. This exquisite sanctuary pays homage to the remarkable tale of Fina, a young girl whose unwavering faith and extraordinary life continue to inspire.

Named after Fina, who departed this world at the tender age of 15 in 1253, the chapel holds a profound connection to her remarkable journey. Afflicted by a terminal illness, Fina’s unwavering devotion shielded her from the agony of pain. She even chose to rest on a humble wooden board instead of a comfortable bed, a testament to her unwavering faith.

As Fina’s life came to an end, a miraculous event unfolded. Local townsfolk witnessed flowers blossoming from the very board she lay upon, a symbol of divine intervention. Furthermore, those who sought solace and healing at her resting place were said to be instantaneously cured of their ailments. Such awe-inspiring miracles cemented Fina’s place in the hearts of the town’s inhabitants, and her revered memory endures within the walls of this cherished chapel.

Go Wine Tasting

Tuscany is known worldwide as the home of some of the greatest wines. As you look down from the walls of San Gimignano, you’ll see acres and acres of gorgeous vineyards spread out before you.

Here are some great wine tasting tours you can experience while visiting San Gimignano:

Fortress of Rocca of Montestaffoli

If you’re looking for a peaceful escape from the bustling crowds, consider heading up to the enchanting ruins of the Rocca Fortress. It only takes a short 5-minute climb from the Piazza del Duomo, and it’s certainly much easier to ascend than the Torre Grossa. La Rocca, once a formidable fort that protected the town, still exudes its medieval charm through its architecturally fierce appearance.

It was constructed by the Florentines in 1353 and unfortunately demolished by the orders of Cosimo I de Medici in 1555. However, remnants of its grandeur can still be witnessed in the form of a tower and fragments of the sturdy walls.

Although the Rocca is mostly a hollow shell, it is often utilized as a venue for concerts and other events. Inside, you’ll find a robust tower nestled in the corner, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the picturesque countryside when climbed.

Torture Museum

The Museo della Tortura is located inside the Torre della Diavola. If you have a fascination for dark and chilling museums, this is the perfect place for you. In the medieval era, torture was employed both as a means of extracting confessions and as a punishment for the convicted before their execution.

At the Torture Museum, you will come across a ghastly collection of medieval tools and artifacts such as iron maidens, racks, spiked inquisition chairs, and guillotines. The scientific descriptions provided alongside these exhibits are presented in a detached and matter-of-fact manner, intensifying the eerie ambiance of the place.

If you don’t like seeing distressing scenes, it may be a good idea to shorten your visit. Even if you have a strong stomach, the museum might be a bit shocking.

Opening hours: everyday from 10am to 7pm

Hike the Elsa Trail

Oh, you won’t believe what awaits you not far from San Gimignano! Get ready to be amazed by the enchanting Elsa Trail, a meandering path that winds its way through nature, right beside a mesmerizing milky blue river. Take a leisurely stroll along the path for just a few kilometers, totaling a delightful 5 km round trip.

Along the way, prepare to be awe-struck as the magnificent Diborrato Waterfall reveals itself in all its splendor. Cascading from a height of 15 meters, this majestic waterfall paints a mesmerizing picture of nature’s raw power.
